A tour Around Jolo, Sulu

Image
  Assalamu Alaykum! (Peace be with you!) I just realized... I haven't talked much about my videos about Sulu in this blog. I have a playlist which you can watch if you are interested in seeing (or maybe visiting?) my dear homeplace.  Just check it out here: JOLO, SULU PLAYLIST You can watch this instead:      Yup, that is all for today.   PS. I am mulling over the idea of transferring my blog from blogspot to wordpress...  hmmmmmm

Learn Bahasa Sug (Tausug)

Assalamu Alaykum! (Peace be with you!)
First off, thank you for visiting this humble blog.
I recently rearranged everything in my blog so it's quite messy around here.
For starters, I transferred ALL the Tausug and Bahasa Sug related stuff to my new site: Tausug101.

Natawa ako sa I love you. Ewan ko ba pero it feels like I'm saying "Kakainin kita" or "Titikman kita". hahaha. peace ahmad. i love your blog. ;-)
ahmad said…
Ahaha. Iba kasi iniisip ng mga tao Minnie eh.

Parang MISUNDERSTANDING na nagiging iba yung Meanings sa ibang tao. one word with two meanings.

"LASA" with stress sa last syllable (parang: la/saa, hindi laa/sa) means Love.

Assalaamu alaykum Mr. Ahmad.
I'm a Tausug who grew up in Manila.
My parents originated from different places.
They communicate in Tagalog so we siblings were brought up being non-Tausug speakers.
I can speak and understand just a little Tausug but I end up nosebleeding during conversations with cousins, aunts and other relatives. Pati yung tipong mapapanis na yung laway mo kasi hindi ka makarelate sa kanila kaya di ka makapagsalita (ang pathetic ko naman... huhuhu). Dere-derecho kasi silang magsalita eh ako uutal-utal at kailangan ko pang isipin kung anong sasabihin ko. Is there a book or other resource available that I can purchase for studying Tausug language? It is not just enough for me to ask them "unu in bisara tausug sin... (this word/phrase)" (i hope i got that right) I've "googled" and "yahooed" all over the internet about Tausug language lessons/tutorials but what I am looking for is a set of lessons that is a sort of "from beginner to advanced to expert" kind of thing, including how to construct sentences correctly, pronouns, adjectives, and stuff like that. Tipong libro talaga. I really want to learn it from scratch kahit medyo marunong ako and converse with it fluently. Insha'Allah matutunan ko rin to in due time. Bang maingat na aku mag-Tausug, I wanna be a Tausug blogger like you and help other Tausug who has the same problem as mine.

Magsukul in advance...

To the Tausugs living in non-Tausug speaking places, the best way to learn the Bahasa Sug, much better than reading instructional materials/books is to live in a Tausug majority places! "Modern" Tausug language is very similar to Tagalog mixed with some Visayan words and is easy to learn....especially when everyone around you speaks this language! Buy your ticket now and trace your roots back in Sulu! In a few weeks, you will be speaking it like the natives, too! Lol!

Its been a while (really really long "while" since I had the time to reply here (considering the fact that this is my blog... It's just 'great' isn't it? haha. Para akong hindi may-ari nitong blog ah) Anyway....

To ANONYMOUS:
BAKIT KA NAG_ANONYMOUS!!! paano kita mati-trace at matutulungan niyan? It's true na mahirap makahanap ng mga libro na tinutukoy mo, kasi first, walang masyado gumagawa nun. Second, kung meron man e kulang din at mahirap i-follow. I dont know, kung kelan tayo maghihintay hanggang may darating na ganung libro, or perhaps its time na simulan natin :-)

I have to Agree with Wilson Baji (na nagawa pang magPromote ng konteng Tourism para sa Sulu. Very wise indeed.) The best way to learn any langguage is to live with the people, and talk the way they do.

So yun, try mo muna magpaturo sa mga pinsan mo. And if it happens na mabasa mo to, kindly email me. I might be able to give you some (konteng) tutorial about our langguage (naks)

salam...

You actually murdered my surname! It's really fatal for a writer to not to give importance to the spelling of the words he is writing, much worst forgetting one's name right spelling! Please avoid that Sir if you are hoping to be a good one in this field!

Salam, it depends on how it was used. It can mean two things:
Simud = mouth
Yan = that
so it's "That mouth"

or
Simuwd = entered
yan = that
so it would mean "which that entered"

Somebody called me lasa. Is this word generic or can be used in a general way and not really mean anything bordering romantic? Kasi it is quite disturbing for me. Thanks.
ahmad said…
salam! (Peace!)

"Lasa" is a generic verb meaning "love". (noun is "Paglasa")
The meaning would depend on how it was delivered or who said it to you. We usually hear these with family members who care and got used to saying those words to those dear to them (like your tita/mommy calling you "iho/iha") would not directly indicate a romantic indication.

But if it was said by someone from the opposite sex who have a romantic interest with you, then yes, it means "My love".

Hope this helped
ahmad said…
"Piyararakag" can mean (1) spoiled (can be a child) like in this sentence: "piyararakag in anak niya" (His child is a spoiled kid) or (2) highly beloved.
ahmad said…
Puso = Jantung
panalo = nangdaug
ahmad said…
"Magsukul" or "Magsukul tuud"
ahmad said…
Wa alaykumus salam :) Yes! Surigaonon and Bahasa Sug are actually related! We have a lot in common :)

Hope you could visit Sulu one day. Marajao adlaw!

ahmad said…
Hello Panda Girl.
I'm so sorry for the late reply.

Unfortunately, I honestly don't know any official translations of those words. Because the word "prosecutor" was not that used in our locality in Sulu. The best I could give you is the word "assigned" could be "kiyawakilan".

You are assigned to lead this community
"Ikaw in kiyawakilan magnakura ha kawman ini."
ahmad said…
I am so sorry for this error.

Pangalan = Ngan
Bahay = Bay
Mesa = Lamisahan
Pagkain = pagkaun
aral = pangadji
ahmad said…
"Nagtumtum ako kaymu."
ahmad said…
"Bunnal kaw" means "You are right." or "what you said is true". This is one funny habit the Tausugs have when having a conversation. When a conversation already dragged for too long and we cannot add anything we simply say "bunnal kaw" haha
ahmad said…
Is there any way I could contact you?
